7 Day Quilling Curve Challenge

Quilling Curve Challenge – Day 7

How have you improved your quilling in the past 7 days?

Did you practice curving these 6 shapes using my 3 simple techniques? Did you see improvement? Were you able to achieve the smooth arcs more quickly?

In this video, I'm going to show you how to tackle the challenge using conventional quilling strips and a standard needle tool, just so you know you can do it regardless of type of paper or tools. Heck, you can even make shapes with a toothpick and ruled paper!

Download the 7 Day Quilling Curve Challenge PDF, watch the video tutorial, then tag me #7dayquillingchallenge and/or @paperzen_cecelialouie – I'd love to see what you make!

7 Day Quilling Curve Challenge

7 Day Quilling Curve Challenge

I have a challenge for you – if you choose to accept it.

Practice your quilling curves a few minutes a day for 7 days. Compare how you did on day 1 to day 7, and see how you’ve improved.

If you’ve watched any of my other videos and see how I tame my paper to follow curves and want to do the same, then this challenge is for you. Challenge other quillers you know and try practicing together.

7 Day Quilling Curve Challenge Worksheet

Make Curves Easily

After practicing these arcs, you’ll be able to achieve the curves you see, or follow a template or drawing you’ve made. Remember to only compare yourself to YOU, not anyone else.

I made this tutorial because my friend said I make this look easier than it is for her. So I thought it over and I’m trying to break down my steps further for you. So if you have other questions, please comment below and it’ll help me think of new ideas for future tutorials.

How to Help

I’m super curious how this challenge turns out. Please let me know. I’m constantly looking for ways to improve my tutorials, and it’s because of your comments that I continue to have inspiration.

Download the 7 Day Quilling Curve Challenge PDF, watch the video tutorial, then tag me #7dayquillingchallenge and/or @paperzen_cecelialouie – I'd love to see what you make!

Quilling Lowercase Letter a and How to Quill a Peacock Feather Tutorial

tháng 7 26, 2018     letters, Quilling, Tutorial     No comments

Quilling Lowercase Letter a and How to Quill a Feather Tutorial

I have always found lowercase letters to be cuter than their uppercase counterparts. Uppercase letters tend to look more rigid and structured because of all the straight sides. But just because lowercase letters are cute, doesn’t mean it’s easier for quilling. It’s actually much more challenging to deal with all these curves.

Follow along with me in my latest video! Try quilling the Lowercase Letter a – download the free template.

In case you didn’t know, I also offer a free template for the upper case letter A.

You can watch it in another video called “Quilling Letter A - How to Outline”.

So if you haven’t tried quilling letters yet, what are you waiting for?

Also in this video, I'll be showing how tapering your ends gives your quilling strips a soft, feathering look that subtley fades away. The first time I ever made a strip "fade" was for some fireworks in a Mickey Mouse project.

After watching my video, please let me know what you think in the comments below. I want to know if you think it’s too difficult to deal with, or whether you’re really enjoying the look regardless of the effort. I haven’t written a book of lowercase letters yet, because I want to know if there’s enough interest first. To be honest with you, it takes a while for me to write a book of quilling patterns, and if I get 100 people telling me they want this, then I’m up to the challenge.

So, give it a try, let me know how it goes, and whether you’d like a book about lowercase letters! As always, your comments are what fuels me. I’m inspired by your feedback. I want to keep improving what I do. Tell me which tip is the one that’s new to you, or let me know what you’d like to see in future videos! Or ask me a question and I’ll try my best to answer!

How to Find the Right and Wrong Sides of Quilling Paper

tháng 3 09, 2018     Quilling, Tutorial     No comments

How to find the Right and Wrong Sides of Quilling Paper - Which is wrong?

How do you find the right and wrong sides of quilling paper?

It's barely noticeable, but your fingers will feel the slight downward facing edge created when a guillotine blade cuts down across all the sheets.
Can you spot the right and wrong sides of the coils, sitting side by side?

How to find the Right and Wrong Sides of Quilling Paper - Wrong Side

In my latest YouTube video, I show how to spot the edges simply by shining light on the coils.

How to find the Right and Wrong Sides of Quilling Paper - S Scroll

And after all the microscopic investigation, I'd like to ask you, “Does it matter?”
My answer would be, “Only if it bothers you.”
If you can’t see or feel it, then I would suggest you don’t worry about it. Most non-quillers are too busy enjoying the overall quilling piece. Besides, when you quill an S-scroll, you’re faced with both a right and wrong side, and there’s not much you can do about that.

Quilling Letter O Tutorial - Wreath

tháng 2 23, 2018     Quilling, Tutorial     No comments

Quilling letter O tutorial

How to join two quilling strip ends when there is no corner

For me, the letter O is the hardest letter of the alphabet because there are no corners or straight sides to hide the join. In this tutorial video, I'll share my techniques for making seamless join.

Quilling Supplies

Supplies

  • Canson Mi-Teintes 160 gsm paper (I cut my own) http://amzn.to/2zpVAg2
  • Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue: http://amzn.to/2i9qA9u
  • Fine Tip Glue Bottle: http://amzn.to/2BbfZ8L
  • Bazzil, Rain Forest 12x12 inch scrapbook cardstock, cut to 12x6, scored to fold to 6x6 inches
  • Cambric 80 lb Cover, Ivory, 8.5x11 sheet, cut to 5.5x5.5 inches (this is probably the most common type of card size I tend to make because I’m not wasting much and using up both sheets efficiently. You can prepare 2 cards the same way using this method and save time for future cards)

Quilling Shaping

Quilling

As usual, we start by softening the strip and follow the template as closely as possible. Keep softening/adjusting the paper until it's following the template.

Some of you have commented that I make this look easy. I usually fast forward videos like this because I don’t want to bore you, but this time I’m leaving it in real time so you can see that I don’t achieve this in 2 seconds. I want you to understand it does takes time, and I’ve been doing this for over 10 years and my fingers know how to feel the paper.

So please be patient with yourself, don’t be negative with your work, try to view your time with your paper, as simply playing. I’m just learning how to play tennis, so believe me when I say I know how you feel. It’s frustrating and I feel slow, but I try to focus on how fun it is and see that I’m improving. As long as you're improving, you know you’re headed in the right direction.

Quilling Baseline Examples

Curved Letters Extend Beyond Baseline and Cap Height

If you’ve been quilling letters, you may have noticed some letters dip below the baseline and above the cap height. This is not a mistake. It’s to create the optical illusion that they sit on the baseline and have the same height as all the other letters. That’s why it was important to include the baseline for every letter in my book, Quilling Letters, so that you can keep all the letters looking the way they should in a name or phrase.

Quilling letter O tutorial

Wreath

Since the letter O is such a circular shapes, I’ve decided to decorate it with a wreath pattern.

To make a leaf branch, soften the entire strip. Visualize the size of leaf you’d like to make and rub the end to form it. Fold to finish forming the leaf, and glue it closed. Snip the length of twig you’d like it to have.

To make a bud branch, soften the entire strip. Visualize the size of bud you’d like to make and fold the strip in half. Rub both ends to form a heart and glue it together. Snip the length of twig you’d like to have and glue it to the heart.

To make the berries, soften the entire strip, and tear the end. Use the end of the ruler for tearing if it’s easier on you. Tearing makes the ends less noticeable. Wrap it around a toothpick twice. For my toothpick, that’s the length of about 3/4 inch or 2 cm. Glue it closed and slide it off your toothpick.

Glue some branches together and place them on your card around the letter until you like the layout. I tend to do this with my tweezers and then I start feeling like a chef you see on tv, when they place a sprout just so.

Since the join is so tenuous, it’s easy to adjust the branches if you really don’t like the way it’s oriented. It’s kind of like training a bonsai branch!

Quilling Letters M+N - Multi-Strip Scrolls

Quilling Letters M and N - Multi-Strip Scroll Tutorial and Pattern - Valentine Card

Multi-strip scrolls are mesmerizing! The quilling strips seem to magically widen and taper as if it's one strip.

You can slowly manipulate each strip until they have even gaps, but there's quicker, easier way to do it – fanning. Watch my latest tutorial video to see how it's done.

Quilling Letters M and N - Multi-Strip Scroll Tutorial and Pattern - Scroll Comparison

Although I've been favoring the thicker Canson Mi-Teintes paper so far in this series of quilling letters tutorials, in the case of multi-strip scrolls, it's really suited for standard quilling paper because of the fine taper you can achieve.

Quilling Letters Tutorial - DEF (how to quill a name or word)

tháng 12 20, 2017     letters, Quilling, Tutorial, video     No comments

Quilling Letters DEF Tutorial Pattern PDF Book #quilling #typography #tutorial #paper #letters

The outlining of letters D, E, and F are somewhat covered by the tutorial techniques shown in my previous videos of A, B, and C. To ensure I don't waste your time repeating myself, this tutorial will show how to bring the letters together to form a word (even though DEF isn't quite a word, unless you're Def Leppard), the same way I did for the cover of my e-book, Quilling Letters. I'm sure you can expand upon what I'm showing to make any name or word, or even a phrase.

Quilling Letters Tutorial Pattern

After printing the outlined letters, use a pencil (and lots of eraser) to draw arcs on top of the template, connecting the letters to give the whole piece cohesiveness. The letters E and F only have straight sides, so I made sure to give them many swirls to soften them up a bit. Going outside the lines of the letters is fun too, and to me, it kind of says "quilling can't be contained!"

Quilling Letters Tutorial Pattern

Just as you've seen me soften the strips to follow the letter outlines, you can now follow your own drawn lines to use them as guides. My final pieces rarely look exactly like my drawing, because once the glued strip touches my surface, it's sometimes worse to pick it up and move on. If I feel the error is going to be very visible, I'll just leave it. However, if you have no choice but to UNDO a glued piece, I show just how to do that too.

In this video, I'll also show how to make the larger style leaves as well.

Quilling Letters Tutorial Pattern

My latest video shows how to outline and fill the letters DEF, giving you an example of how to connect the letters to form a word.

What kind of projects are you making? Are these tutorials helpful to you? What else do you want to see? Let me know in the comments below.

Quilling Letters E-book, 26 Patterns and Templates for Quilling the Alphabet

tháng 11 15, 2017     book, Quilling, Tutorial     No comments

Quillling_Letters_Cecelia_Louie

I'm excited to introduce my new e-book, Quilling Letters! I have watched quilling typography projects gain in popularity with each passing year, and hope my book will help you in your next letter masterpiece.

Quilling Letters Measuring Strips

I've pre-measured every side and curve of the 26 letters of the alphabet. Each number corresponds with a template pattern below. Just like my first book, Pretty Quilled Cards, you won't need a ruler or count a fraction of an inch. Just lay your strip on top, score, snip, and you're ready to fold, then glue.

Quilling Letters Measuring Strips

It's much easier to follow along a template when quilling letters.

Quilling Letters Tracing

Use a dried up pen to trace on top of my template to leave a score line on your work surface.

Quiling Letters Tutorial Pattern Video

I've also filmed a video showing how to outline the letter A. Follow along with me by downloading the template to outline the letter A.

Another video showing how to quickly and easily fill the letter will be coming soon.

I hope my book helps you with your next quilling type project – I love hearing about how you've been inspired to try quilling too! Please leave a comment below or any advice you may have to help me improve my next videos.
